But sustained improvements in living standards depend heavily on productivity: the amount of value produced from each unit of labour and capital.<\/p>\n<p>Productivity can rise through better infrastructure, stronger skills, technological adoption, more efficient firms and institutions that lower the cost of doing business. It can also stagnate even while headline growth looks healthy if expansion depends mainly on population increases or temporary spending.<\/p>\n<p>For businesses and policymakers, the central question is whether an economy is becoming more capable, not merely larger.
